Thanks to your 5×1000 we take care of the Maitreya Children's Home

In the last meeting with Ven. Thubten Chonyi, Abbot of Kopan and our Lhungtok Choekhorling Monastery we talked about the possibility of allocating a part of the 5×1000 received from your preferences to a charity project. Among the many deserving ones our choice, for urgency and necessity, went to the Maitreya Children's Home.

In the Solu Khumbu area of Nepal, the Himalayan mountain area where Lama Zopa Rinpoche was born, Thubten Shedrup Ling Monastery was founded in the 70s as a spiritual centre for the Tibetan refugee community.

Over the years, many Tibetans have moved to various other countries and as a result, the number of Tibetan children has also decreased.
The children of the Sherpa families, the original ethnic group of the area, were welcomed into the school thanks to the desire of many Buddhist families from the most remote areas to offer their children an education that would enhance their language and their religious culture.

As part of its community work, Thubten Shedrup Ling Monastery has decided to build the Maitreya Children's Home, a hostel to accommodate the children of families who live far from the school, even several days' walk away, without roads or public transport.

Over the years, the number of children welcomed has grown steadily, a sign of the deep need in that area for a Buddhist school that offers a safe and supportive environment where they can study and live at affordable costs.

What is this?

The daily program for the children includes prayers in the morning (they all come from Buddhist families) and lessons on Buddhism in the afternoon after school. The hostel welcomes both boys and girls and several mothers take care of them.

At the moment the monastery kitchen provides meals for both the monks and the children of the hostel. The dining room is shared with the monks, until a new one can be built along with a dedicated kitchen for the hostel.

The rooms are furnished in a simple and functional way, with bunk beds and small personal lockers. Heating is provided by large stoves fueled by wood supplied by the local forestry office. The kitchen also uses wood stoves for preparing meals. In the future, solar systems for heating water are planned.

Here's what we'll actually do! Together with you.

  • Sponsor a recurring payment for scholarships for children – (US$30 per month)
  • Donate one-time to the children of a poor family, for the purchase of mattresses, sheets and blankets (25 US$)
  • Offers for the hostel food fund
  • General donations for hostel running costs
  • Donation for the installation of solar systems for water heating.
