UPDATE MAY 10, 2023

Upcoming Puja of Long Life and Offering of 1.000 Buddhas to His Holiness the Dalai Lama

On 24th May 2023, the FPMT has the incredibly precious opportunity to offer a life long puja to His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Namgyal Monastery, Mcleod Ganj, India. Everyone is welcome to attend in person or participate online. The puja starts at 08.00 (Indian Standard Time). Those who register in person are requested to allow enough time to obtain the pass.

The monks and nuns of Kopan have been working hard to perfect the current puja, which will be based on Lama Chopa's long life puja.
The monks and nuns of Kopan have been working hard to perfect the puja proper, as they will offer chanting and build on the Lama Chopa Long life puja.

We will be sharing the text with you soon, so that everyone can be familiar with it and join in the prayers.
The 1.000 statues of Shakyamuni Buddha that will be offered to His Holiness are under construction, as are two life-size statues of Namgyalma and Padmasambhava. The statues were filled in, gilded, and faces painted in preparation for the offering. During the puja we will have more than 400 of the 1.000 statues to offer, and the remaining statues will be offered to His Holiness as soon as they are completed.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone who has made offerings for the statues and puja so far. There is still the option to participate by offering statues and other offerings to the puja.

This puja is extremely touching right now: for many years Lama Zopa Rinpoche has been asking to offer a life long puja to His Holiness the Dalai Lama – who is in fact Chenrezig Buddha – on behalf of the FPMT. Now we have the opportunity to fulfill this request and we are incredibly moved to offer this puja on behalf of Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Khen Rinpoche Geshe Chonyi will offer all the symbolic objects of long life during the puja, while Khen Rinpoche and Venerable Roger Kunsang will offer the mandala and body, speech and mind to His Holiness. The puja also falls on the forty-second day that Rinpoche has shown the aspect of passing away.

We hope that everyone can participate in this heartfelt offering of long life to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in person or online, to join this puja on behalf of Lama Zopa Rinpoche and to fulfill one of Rinpoche's recent heart wishes

UPDATE OF APRIL 26, 2023

An update from the FPMT Board: Meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama on April 26th

Meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, 26 April 2023: Venerable Tenpa Choden, Director of Kopan Monastery; Venerable Thubten Kunken, Head of the Kopan Office; and four of the five board members of the FPMT (Khen Rinpoche Geshe Chonyi, Abbot of Kopan; Venerable Roger Kunsang; Karuna Cayton and Dale Davis)

Dear friends,

On April 26, two weeks after the sudden passing of our beloved and incomparably kind Guru, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the FPMT Council was able to have an interview with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Four of the five Council members were present at the meeting, Khen Rinpoche Geshe Chonyi (Abbot of Kopan), the Venerable Roger Kunsang, Dale Davis and Karuna Cayton. Also present were two senior monks from Kopan, Venerable Tenpa Choden, Director of Kopan Monastery, and Venerable Thubten Kunken, Office Manager.

We are pleased to share the video and translation of our meeting, in which His Holiness clearly offers the important guides and essential advice we have requested. The three areas we sought advice on were Lama Zopa Rinpoche's reincarnation, how the organization will be led, and advice to Lama Zopa Rinpoche's students.

While Rinpoche's passing is beyond comprehension and heartbreaking for many of us, His Holiness offers a bright light of hope and comfort.

Please read the full translation below and watch the video, which contains a short simultaneous translation by His Holiness's translator, Tenzin Tsepak.

FPMT Board of Directors

TRANSCRIPT OF MEETING WITH THE FPMT BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA, APRIL 26, 2023

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: Lama Zopa Rinpoche was indeed a trusted Dharma friend. He really did him better than him. I am now in my eighties and expect to live another 10-15 years. Since Lama Zopa Rinpoche was a close and intimate friend of Dharma, for my part I am praying and have great hopes that I will see a young reincarnation who will continue to benefit the Dharma and sentient beings.

Based on the signs that are showing up, it looks like I may live to be over a hundred years old. Therefore, in that last phase of my life, I think I will be able to see the young reincarnation of Lama Zopa Rinpoche as a child at approximately this height [His Holiness points to his chest height with his hand].

Ven. Roger Kunsang: We would like to ask Your Holiness to guide us in finding the exact reincarnation.

His Holiness: Sure. First I will do a divination to check whether it is time to seek reincarnation or not. If this indicates that the time is right to seek reincarnation, then I will do a more precise divination to verify where to seek reincarnation – India, Nepal, Tibet or other countries.

I have warm feelings for dear Rinpoche. He has been so loyal and good to me. Therefore, I have the responsibility to find the right reincarnation of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, so that the reincarnation continues to benefit the Dharma. If the reincarnation of Lama Zopa Rinpoche is teasing, I can discipline the child myself! [Laughs]

Ven. Roger: Rinpoche has said many times that when he dies there will be no master to lead the organization. But he [Lama Zopa Rinpoche] thought that between his office and the FPMT board, some members are here, and the Abbot of Kopan Monastery [who is a board member], would lead the organization.

His Holiness: Very good. Marvelous.

Ven. Roger: Does His Holiness have any advice for Rinpoche's students right now?

His Holiness: My dear friend Lama Zopa Rinpoche has taken a great responsibility to preserve the Dharma and the Sangha community. Therefore it is now important to continue to fulfill the wishes that Lama Zopa Rinpoche had when he was alive.

For my part, I will continuously offer all possible support, as if dear Lama Zopa Rinpoche were next to me.

Tashi Delek, is that all?

Khen Rinpoche Geshe Chonyi: The FPMT Board pledges to sincerely follow whatever His Holiness says.

His Holiness: Thank you. A thousand thanks.

For my part, I have no command or order. It is important that you analyze the facts of a situation. Through your discussions, and after an agreement is reached, you can bring it to me and I can offer my support. I like democracy. I have already given up the Dalai Lama's position of authority. I gave power to the Tibetan people. Now the Tibetan administration is run under the parliamentary system.

You have a better understanding and experience of the [FPMT] situation. So first have a good discussion among yourselves, then you can ask me and I will offer you my support.

In regards to the reincarnation of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, it is important on your part that you do your own investigations. And I will too for my part. I will do the divinations and when the reincarnation becomes big it is important that you study.

I will live for another 15-20 years. As I get older it is important that young people, like the reincarnation of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, gradually take on more responsibilities.

UPDATE OF APRIL 20, 2023

Letter from Khenrinpoche Geshe Chonyi, Abbot of Kopan Monastery and Board Member of FPMT Inc. Board Member

Prayers continue around the clock in front of the holy body of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and also on every inch of the Kopan monastery.

We are pleased to share this letter from Khenrinpoche Geshe Chonyi, Abbot of Kopan Monastery and Board Member of FPMT Inc. Khenrinpoche has sent this letter, in Tibetan, English and Chinese for those related to Lama Zopa Rinpoche, in the sad occasion of the seven days since the passing of Rinpoche.

As everyone knows, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche took the form of passing into parinirvana to free us from the attachment to permanence. No doubt, many are deeply concerned and wonder what is happening now. Therefore, I would like to briefly explain the current situation.

Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche was invited to attend a Dharma function in the Tsum region of Nepal. There, several local groups were celebrating the XNUMXth year of declaring the Tsum Valley as an area of non-violence and promoting vegetarianism, as well as their formal commitment to continue in the same way for another XNUMX years. Rinpoche went, as requested, to attend this function and to confer the Hayagriva empowerment on the faithful.

The altitude of this area is 3.700 meters (12.000 feet) above sea level. Due to some signs of altitude sickness, Rinpoche decided to return to Kathmandu and Kopan Monastery earlier than planned. At around 9:30 on April 13th, sadly, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche showed the aspect of passing away here at Kopan Monastery. As soon as Rinpoche began his clear light meditation, we informed His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who advised the students to engage in the practice of Tara Cittamani, reciting Lama Tsonghapa's The Essence of Eloquence, and performing the self -initiations of Heruka and other deities. Consequently, all disciples and the ordained sangha immediately started these practices. Likewise, we have received prayer letters, condolences and advice from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Holiness the Karmapa, His Holiness Sakya Trichen and various other lamas in the lineage. For this we express our deepest gratitude.

On April 14, at about 22 pm, when the monks reached the point in the Guhyasamaja sadhana where the four goddesses evoke the rising deity from dharmakaya chanting, Rinpoche got up from his clear, light meditation. This fact was reported to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and to Rinpoche's other teachers, to whom we asked for advice. They advised us that since Lama Zopa Rinpoche has done many deeds for the Dharma and has thousands of disciples all over the world, it would be good to preserve Rinpoche's holy body so that his many disciples could gradually come to pay their respects. Therefore, we are proceeding with the conservation of Rinpoche's holy body according to the traditional practice.

Although in reality Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche is already a fully enlightened buddha, to allow all of us disciples to accumulate merits and purify negativity; and for the speedy return of error-free reincarnation, for seven days we are performing the following prayers twenty-four hours a day: the self-initiations of Yamantaka, Guhyasamaja and Heruka, the self-initiation of Vajrayogini, the recitations of the Essence of Eloquence, the three foundational texts (The Adornment for Clear Realisation, Entry into the Middle Way and The Treasury of Knowledge), the Medicine Buddha puja, the Heruka Guru Puja and others.

During this time, many lamas who were close to Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche and many lay people come continuously to pay respects and make offerings. Likewise, we thank the Grand Monastic Sees of Sera, Drepung, Ganden and the Upper and Lower Tantric Colleges, many other Gelukpa monasteries in Nepal and other monasteries and lay associations that perform prayers in solidarity.

For the entire forty-nine day period, we will perform the following prayers twenty-four hours a day: special rituals related to the preservation of the holy body, Yamantaka and Vajrayogini self-initiations, Guru Puja, Praise dependent relationship recitation, chanting the Names of Manjushri, the Queen of Prayers, the Adornment for Clear Realisation, Entry into the Middle Way and the Prayer of Swift Return composed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Finally, I sincerely ask all faithful disciples who have a connection with Rinpoche, direct or indirect, to come together to wholeheartedly fulfill all of Rinpoche's advice and complete the unfinished projects that remain until Rinpoche's reincarnation comes. that he will once again take responsibility for continuing Rinpoche's enlightened activities,

We will keep you updated on any developments that arise in the future.

Geshe Thubten Chonyi, abbot of the Kopan monastery and member of the directive council of the FPMT.

UPDATE OF APRIL 16, 2023

The embalming process

The process of embalming Lama Zopa Rinpoche's body has begun. We have a short video to share about the prayers that take place around Rinpoche's sacred body at the beginning of the embalming process.

As for the lamas who help to embalm Rinpoche's body, the “Nyingma lama” we referred to in yesterday's update is one of Rinpoche's teachers, Lama Ngawang Chokyung. We are exceptionally grateful for his guidance. Lama Ngawang Chokyung is well versed in this method and supervised the embalming of His Holiness Trulshik Rinpoche. The "former abbot of Gyumed" referred to is the current abbot of Segyü Dratsang, Khen Rinpoche Losang Wangdu. We are very grateful to him for the care and assistance he has given us at this time.

Speedy Return Prayer of His Holiness the Dalai Lama

With great joy we received the prayer that His Holiness the Dalai Lama composed for the speedy return of Lama Zopa Rinpoche. It is available in English and Tibetan and has a particularly poignant colophon. For the convenience of students, we have compiled his Holiness Prayer, along with a small collection of additional prayers for Rinpoche's speedy return, spontaneously composed by other illustrious lamas with whom Rinpoche had a connection in this life. It will be updated as we receive new compositions.
Download His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Prayer for Lama Zopa Rinpoche's Speedy Return with additional prayers from other distinguished lamas here >
This booklet is very easy to use: each prayer is bookmarked and linked to the contents page.

The following prayers are being offered today, April 16, at Kopan Monastery:

Tributes and condolences

We have received many tributes to Lama Zopa Rinpoche and messages of support and condolences, including some prayers and practices offered for Rinpoche's speedy return, from lamas and monasteries around the world. You can read them on our new page Tributes and Condolences, which we added to the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Updates page (in English).

Practice and dedications in progress

Please keep trying to fulfill Rinpoche's holy wishes, especially to practice impermanence and bodhichitta in the context of the lamrim. Fulfilling the gurus' holy wishes is a very important part of inviting the guru back.

May Rinpoche be reborn as soon as possible in a place where he can be recognized very quickly and can be of great benefit to sentient beings.

With great affection,
Your friends at the FPMT International Office

UPDATE OF APRIL 15, 2023

On April 14 at 22.00 Nepal time, blood oozed out of Rinpoche's left nostril, a sign that Rinpoche had finished his meditation. The room was then made cold to keep the sacred body in place and this morning the sacred body was packed in ice. The embalming process is the next step.

Khandro Kunga Bhuma informed that today (April 15th) is dakini day and that 19.30pm Nepal time is the special time on dakini day which allows Rinpoche's sacred body to begin the embalming process. Khandro Kunga Bhuma will continue to look after him – he is now in Nepal.

There are two lamas who will take care of the embalming process, which could take several months. They are Geshe Wangdu, former abbot of Gyumed, and a Lama Nyingma (from whom Lama Zopa Rinpoche received the transmissions), who took care of the embalming of Trulshik Rinpoche. Ven. Roger will keep us posted on the process and timeline, and we will continue to share updates on this process.

His Excellency Linpoche suggested embalming Rinpoche's sacred body (instead of cremating it) because Lama Zopa Rinpoche has so many students and is so widely known, so that people can come and pay their respects to Rinpoche's sacred body, which will become an object of pilgrimage to Kopan. As mentioned, Ven. Roger asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama to comment on this suggestion, and His Holiness advised that this is a very good way forward.

In Kopan prayers continue constantly: all members of the monastery and convent participate in them. The livestream of prayers from Rinpoche's room continues.

Also, groups of people from other monasteries pray in their own way at the Kopan gompa for Rinpoche. We are bidding for them. Many monasteries are also doing pujas and prayers for Rinpoche in their gompas. We will also make offers to them.

Please continue to try to fulfill Rinpoche's holy wishes, especially to practice impermanence and bodhichitta in the context of the lamrim. Fulfilling the gurus' sacred wishes is a very important part of inviting the guru back.

We are pleased to report that we have just received His Holiness the Dalai Lama's prayer for speedy return, in Tibetan, which can be downloaded from the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Updates page. We will make it available in English as soon as possible.

We are also very happy to share Khandro Kunga Bhuma's prayer of swift return, in Tibetan and with a quick English translation, also now downloadable from the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Updates page.

We rejoice in the speedy return prayers kindly composed by other lamas as well. We will add them to the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Updates page soon.

May Rinpoche be reborn as soon as possible in a place where he can be recognized very quickly and be of great benefit to sentient beings.

With great affection,
Your friends at the FPMT International Office

UPDATE OF APRIL 14, 2023

Update from the FPMT International Office, April 14, 2023

Yesterday we shared the incredibly heartbreaking news that Lama Zopa Rinpoche displayed the aspect of passing on April 13th.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche is still meditating in his room in Kopan Monastery. A short video of Rinpoche in clear light meditation is available on Youtube if you want to see our precious guru right now.

In the next room where the holy body of Lama Zopa Rinpoche sits in meditation, the monks of Kopan immediately began and are continuously engaged in prayers, pujas and self-initiations for twenty-four hours, and in the main gompa of Kopan the prayers are offers continuously. The prayers in progress with the monks and nuns are livestreamed and you can connect to this moment on Youtube.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama gave advice on prayers and practices to do in Kopan and also immediately agreed to compose a quick return prayer for Rinpoche's students.

Lelung Tulku is in Kopan offering special prayers and pujas, while Khandro Kunga Bhuma will arrive tomorrow.

The twenty-four hour prayers, pujas and self-initiations of the Kopan monks included Yamantaka's self-initiation, the Eight Prayers (repeatedly), Lama Chopa (repeatedly), recitations of the root text of Manjushri and of Drang Nge Lekshe Nyingpo, and many prayers of Tara.

This morning, April 14, the nuns of Kopan began an all-day Vajrayogini self-initiation. In the evening the monks will perform Guhyasamaja self-initiation, which will continue throughout the night.

On April 15, some tantric monks from Gyudme arrive, who will be joined by the monks of Kopan to do an extensive self-initiation of the Mandala of the Body of Heruka to five deities. This activity will continue every day, twenty-four hours a day, for many days.

Following the advice of His Eminence Linpoche, and confirmed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche's body will not be cremated, but will be embalmed. Khandro Kunga Bhuma will handle this process.

We will communicate information regarding the main prayer ceremony for Rinpoche when the time comes and we will have specific details to share.

Khandro-la said very clearly that Rinpoche faced obstacles for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and perhaps other lamas as well, but surely Rinpoche faced His Holiness's obstacles.

Rinpoche continues to practice clare meditation, which gives us a very special opportunity to connect with Rinpoche's holy mind.

Please continue to try to fulfill Rinpoche's holy wishes, especially to practice impermanence and bodhichitta in the context of the lamrim. Fulfilling the gurus' sacred wishes is a very important part of inviting the guru back.

VERY IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT LAMA ZOPA RINPOCHE

13 April 2023
With a broken heart we share the official communication from FPMT International

Dear friends,

our precious guru is sitting in meditation in Kopan monastery.
Rinpoche had been in the mountains in the Tsum Valley since Monday and had to be rushed down as he suffered from altitude sickness.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu this morning, Rinpoche stopped breathing. The chief physician of Karuna Hospital tried to revive Rinpoche for some time, but without success. Rinpoche went into meditation at about 9.30 am Nepal time today Thursday April 13th.

His Holiness has been briefed and is giving advice.

The gyupa lamas and monks are taking turns in Tara Cittamani offering sessions with Rinpoche, as advised by His Holiness. More pujas and prayers are offered here in Kopan.

Khadro-la advised that this is a very important and precious moment for the students. Khadro-la went on to advise that the best thing for students to do right now is to practice bodhicitta in particular, as well as impermanence in the context of the lamrim, and then also as much as possible to help fulfill the sacred wishes of the guru.

Khadro-la insisted that we should take this opportunity to try to realize the lamrim path in our practice. Meditating and praying to the guru for his blessings and guidance is very important. And try as much as possible to complete Rinpoche's sacred projects and desires, so as to already generate the desire to be able to do it.

Please pray and dedicate to Rinpoche that he will be reborn as soon as possible in a place where he can be recognized very quickly and can be of great benefit to sentient beings.

Please continue to try to fulfill Rinpoche's holy wishes, especially to practice impermanence and bodhichitta in the context of the lamrim. Fulfilling the gurus' sacred wishes is a very important part of inviting the guru back.

As you know, Rinpoche was the embodiment of bodhichitta and always stressed the importance of remembering impermanence and the essential need to put the teachings into practice. This is what we can do now for our precious guru: try to follow Rinpoche's advice from the heart. We can all connect with the guru and receive his blessings in this way – NOW is a very important time for this.

We will send further updates regularly.

Our hearts are breaking, we take all our support from Rinpoche's teachings, the guidance of His Holiness and our teachers, and our FPMT family.

With great affection

On behalf of the Ven Roger Kunsang
